SMOKE REMOVAL SYSTEMS
Planning and designing of smoke removal systems and smoke control is one of the mandatory subsections of the fire safety part of the construction project.
From a practical point of view, smoke removal performs several important functions, incl. saving people's lives, minimizing property and environmental damage, preventing the spread of fire and smoke, facilitating rescue operations and slowing down the reaching of the full combustion phase.

Who can design smoke removal systems?
-
In order to design smoke removal systems, the developer must have a professional certificate corresponding to the issued "Safety systems designer" professional standard.
What is the purpose of smoke control?
There are several goals of smoke control, and the main goals determine the selection, dimensioning and reliability criteria of smoke removal devices.
The goals of smoke control are:
-
keep the evacuation and entry routes smoke-free for the time necessary for evacuation;
-
support rescue operations by forming a smoke-free zone;
-
delay the arrival of the full combustion phase and thus slow down the growth of the harmless fire or prevent the development of the harmless fire to the full combustion phase;
-
protect equipment, furnishings and property (inventory) in the building from smoke damage;
-
reduce the temperature effect of hot combustion gases on building structures, facades or glass surfaces;
-
reduce sting, smoke and heat damage;
-
create excess pressure against the evacuation direction, thanks to which the evacuation route is cleared of smoke;
-
reduce smoke density.
What happens if smoke extraction is designed incorrectly?
Improperly designed and constructed smoke extraction can make evacuation difficult and increase the risk to people's lives and property. In the case of fire accidents, the main cause of death is poisoning/health damage caused by combustion gases. A properly designed smoke extraction system minimizes or eliminates these risks.
Which regulatory documents are the basis of smoke control?
On the basis of Section 13(3) of the Construction Code, the Minister of Economy and Infrastructure has established the requirements for the construction project. The rescue board checks the fire safety part of the construction project, the requirements of which are set out in § 22 of the aforementioned regulation.
